During the month of December AnchorPoint students at all grade levels experimented with computer programming or writing in "Code". A wonderful site they used was hourofcode.com - a great learning site for those cold days when they stayed inside at recess. We ended the year with our Makerspace Day which the students loved! See previous post for pics and more info.
Students will begin a Computer Assisted Design unit in January. Older students will be using Google Sketch-Up, TinkerCad and 3D Tim to create 3D objects. We are going to be getting our 3D printer going as well so look forward to seeing some models come home! Younger students will be using Brick building and Lego Designer to create objects in 3D. We will also use Roblox Studio to create 3D worlds similar to Minecraft.
Students willalso be reviewing internet safely rules. For example, a good rule of thumb when using email is to expect it will be read by a much larger audience than you may have intended. Once something is sent it remains on the Internet Service Providers computer.
Stay tuned for further technology updates!

On Friday, December 16, 2016 the AnchorPoint gym was turned into a MakerSpace! Makerspaces are creative DIY (do it yourself) spaces where students gather to create, invent, and learn using STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). AnchorPoint students and students from other area schools came, explored, and learned using our 3D printer, software, electronics, crafts, hardware supplies, tools, and so much more!

Our 4s Preschool class participated in Election Day! These future voters learned about what voting is, what a candidate is, and about ballots. Ms. Becky read some books to the students and then they voted for either Duck or Clifford for president! Voters received a red, white, and blue popsicle when finished : )

WOW! We are back to school and we have been busy! We are looking forward to another great year here at AnchorPoint Christian School. We have a few important events coming up soon:
Back to School Bonanza
Come to the gym with the entire family on Thursday, September 29, to celebrate the beginning of the school year with the AnchorPoint Christian School community! Preschool through Grade 6 families are invited to enjoy eating and talking together during supper at 6:00 PM.
Supper will be followed by a "What You Need to Know" time for all parents/guardians. Our experienced teachers will tell how AnchorPoint's curriculum gives students the very best Christ-centered education. They will explain their classroom policies and share plans for the school year. This adult-only classroom time helps set expectations, encourages relationships, and invites participation. Childcare will be provided in the Daycare room.
Right after their own classroom visit(s), parents/guardians pick up their child(ren). Even if you can’t come for the supper, be sure to attend “What You Need to Know”.
Grandparents and Grandfriends Day
This event has moved to the Fall this year! Grandparents and other older adults can be very important people in children's lives. Students feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when they know that people in their extended family and community are interested in their education. So, we're having a celebration - Grandparents & Grandfriends Day - to recognize the importance of relationships across generations. Join us on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 for this wonderful event!

We have had a wonderful year embracing evolving technologies. AnchorPoint students were given the opportunity to see a 3-D printer in operation, explore virtual reality and make coloring book pages come alive in Augment Reality. Team 3 students set up a real snack stand with punch and cookies to keep track of sales on a spreadsheet. Team 2 took a virtual camping trip and planned the expenses involved. We will finish out the school year with some stop motion animation movies on the Kindles for Team 3 and using Kindles with the computer in Team 1. Team 2 will learn how to save and collect safe websites.
Thank you to all of the AnchorPoint families and supporters! It's an honor to be able to teach students how to use technology as a tool in a Christian setting. Learning how to use technology in positive ways and limiting the amount of screen time is so important. It has been an honor to share these important times with your child.

Technology teacher, Mrs. DeBoer reports:
Currently, Team 1 is learning directional programming using virtual robots. This type of programming is what is used today in manufacturing production. We will use Logo programming and an online language at Robo Mind Academy.
Team 2 students are working on Blockly type of code on the site Hour of Code. We use Star Wars and Minecraft characters to program sets of instructions. You can play along at www.code.org.
Team 3 students just finished photo stories using transparent images and combining them to make it look like they were world travelers. After a brief review of Blockly, Team 3 students will learn to make their own video games using the software application, Scratch.
